how to make a filet crochet scarf

a while back i saw a pattern for a bolero designed by gosyo, click on the picture or the link to go to post on their website.

especially the stitch pattern i think is very beautiful.

currently i am making a scarf with the pattern, but unfortunately i do not have enough yarn to also crochet the elegant points at the short ends of the scarf, that was my intention.

the yarn i work with i have bought in 2010 or 2011 and is of the same type as the yarn i used for the candy color scarf.
it consists of 50% viscose (bamboo) and 50% acrylic.
at the time i did not know that this yarn – the viscose/bamboo – is bad for the environment and for the people involved in the production process. that means no new balls for me but only use the ones i have in my stash (3 balls).

back to my scarf
  • if you like to make this scarf too, you can download the pattern here
  • google translate can help or scroll down this page for more info
  • and this is the direct link to the pdf: diagram/chart – you need the chart on page 1
  • concerning the type of yarn, i think a not too thin and somewhat fluffy yarn gives the best effect.

.

how to make
  • what i have done is as follows: i have crocheted chains until i had the width that i wanted, and then i started crocheting the stitch pattern
  • i had only a few chains left and those i have disconnected
  • after two of the three balls of yarn i started with crocheting on the other side of the beginning chains
  • the chart on page 2 tells you also how to make the wavy edges straight.
  • note: ignore the second last row on the chart and crochet the last row, adjusted to the last row of your scarf. (detail of chart 212ss:04 gosyo)

.

now i just need to figure out how to make a neat finish on the long sides of the scarf with almost no yarn left.

to be continued …
UPDATE!

my crochet filet scarf is finished, see here

spiders and stripes bag

first i was not going to write a pattern but after i finished the bag i thought it would be nice to share it with you. i hope it is clear enough, because writing a pattern while you work is much better than when a project is done. but well, here it is and i wish you happy crocheting!

note: making this bag does take experience with crocheting.

the bag has a lacy / filet crochet body with a solid top and handles
for the body of the bag you can use this pattern for a scarf, a free pdf download diagram from a japanese website.
.
thanks for sharing the pattern:

UPDATE 16 march 2015!
unfortunately the website of darumo-ito is unavailable, but luckily i saved the pdf that you can download from this link: diagram daruma-ito for spiders and stripes bag. i do not know if this is illegal and i will look for another option.

.

i used material from my stash:
  1. main color: catania 245 anis – 3 balls
  2. color 2: catania 158 rosee
  3. color 3: phil coton 3 poudre
  4. color 4: catania 130 nature

.

the yarn is suitable for crochet hook size 2,5 – 3,0/3,5 mm but i used hook size 4.0 mm

  • optional: a key ring
  • a small piece of matching fabric, sewing thread

.

used stitches (american english):
  • ss: slipstitch
  • ch: chain
  • sc: single crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • dc: double crochet
  • 2sctog: 2 single crochet together
  • 2hdctog: 2 half double crochet together
  • 2dctog: 2 double crochet together

.

the body of the bag
  1. on the diagram you replace the two dc together at the beginning and end of each row with 3 ch or 1 dc.
  2. i crocheted chains until i had the length that i wanted for the bag, then i started crocheting the pattern and the remaining chains i later disconnected, the yarn end i have woven in.
  3. crochet for front and back of the bag 7 spider motifs for the width and 6 for the height each.
  4. for 7 motifs you need 101 chains.
  5. first row:
start 1 dc in 7th ch from hook, *1 ch, skip 1 ch, 1 dc in next chain*, repeat between * and * until end of row, follow diagram from here.
  6. weave in yarn ends.

.

edges
hold one of the sides of the bag with the right side facing you, attach yarn into top left 1-ch space and make 2 ch, crochet two dc together with one of them in the same space and 1 in the next 1-ch space. make two dc together with one dc in the same space as the last dc and one dc in the next dc. repeat this all along this side, the bottom and the other side an also in the corners. end with 1 dc in the last space. weave in ends.
you will see that the edge bends a little inward and corners have been created.
repeat this at the other side of the bag.

attaching front and back together
place both halves with the right sides together, you crochet only along the left and right sides and the bottom.
attach yarn onto the first 2dctog of the side that lies on top, make 1 sc, remove hook from loop, insert hook in corresponding stitch of the other side of the bag, pick up dropped loop, pull loop through stitch, ch 1, * 1 sc in next 2dctog of the side that lies on top, remove hook from loop, insert hook in corresponding stitch of the other side of the bag, pick up dropped loop, pull loop through stitch, ch 1 *, repeat between * and * along both sides, corners and bottom.

do not fasten off.

top of the bag
  • 1 ch, make 2sctog all along the top edge of the bag in the same manner as the row with the 2dctog, that is:
crochet 2sctog together with one sc in the same space as the last sc and one sc in the next space.
repeat until end of row, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 2 and make a row of two hdc together along the top edge, in the same manner as the row with the 2dctog,
but in this row crochet into the stitches. see photo below.
  • fasten off and weave in ends.
spiders and stripes bag - top of the bag

  • attach color 3. make three rows of hdc, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 4. make 1 row of hdc, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 2. make a row of hdc, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 3. make three rows of hdc, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 4. make 1 row of hdc, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 2. make a row of hdc,  remove hook from loop, fold bag with front and back flat on each other and
mark the beginning and end points of the handles.
for my bag i chose left and right 12 stitches measured from the sides, then i crocheted 75 chains for the handles.
  • pick up your hook and crochet a row of hdc and the chains for the handles.
  • crochet two rows of hdc.
  • fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 3. make 1 row of hdc, fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 4. make 1 row of slip stitches, into the 2 back loops only, and 1 row of slip stitches, 3 back loops only
(that are 2 loops of the stitches of the row with hdc and 1 back loop of the stitches of the previous row).
  • fasten off and weave in ends.
  • attach color 3. crochet 1 row of ss around the other side of the handles and partially along the top of the bag, see photos.

optional
small pocket
  • make 1 spider motif and crochet all around a row of 1 ch, 1 sc, 1 ch, end with a ss into the first sc.
  • second row into the back loops only: 1 ch, 1 sc in the first sc, *1 sc in the next ch, 1 sc in the next sc*
repeat between * and * in all subsequent sc and chs.
  • fasten off and weave in ends.
  • sew the motif on the side of the bag where rows have started and ended, but leave the top open.
strap for key ring
from row 2 and further: work in the front loops only.
  • crochet 5 ch, 1 ss into the second ch from hook and into the next 3 ch, 1 ch turn
  • 1 ss into the first ss and into the next 3 ss, 1 ch, turn
  • repeat row 2 until you have about 7-8 cm, fold the strap around the key ring and attach the two ends with ss.
  • cut yarn but leave enough length to sew it onto the inside of  your bag, see photo.

pocket

make a pocket of matching fabric that you sew onto the inside of the bag, i can close the pocket with a push button.

your bag is ready and i hope you will enjoy using it!

.

but wait…. what is this?

tiny spiders bag

a tiny spiders bag

i have no detailed description for you, but i think you can make a tiny spiders bag with these instructions.

  • create a front and back of each two spider motifs wide and high.
  • crochet a row of hdc all around both sides each, do not make too many stitches because then the edge will not be flat.
i alternately crocheted 1 or 2 hdc in a space and at the top 1 hdc into the 3 middle spaces.
in the corners you make 2 hdc, 2ch, 2 hdc.
  • crochet both parts of the bag together in the same way as the spiders and stripes bag, but this time with the wrong sides together.
  • crochet in the same color a row of hdc along the top.
  • crochet with a second color a row of hdc along the top.
  • crochet a second row of hdc but make the handles also, i needed 40 chains for a good length.
  • then with a third color you make two rows of slip stitches along the top.
  • fasten off and your tiny spiders bag is ready.

because the  contrasting colors it was clearly visible where i had woven in the yarn ends.
therefore i crocheted a small rectangle to camouflage that on the inside and a colorful round motif on the outside of the bag.

anyway, have fun with it!

two projects

hello here i am again! nice to see you!

the diamonds blanket progresses but my left shoulder hurts so much that i’ve started a small project, so i can sit and work in a better posture. after that i go back to work on my large project. regarding the blanket: the last strip is ready but i yet have to attach it onto the blanket, the embroidery is done although i have many threads to weave in at the back. after those two jobs are done i can crochet the edge.

hope to see you soon!

crocheted blue diamonds 8

…..

thanks for stopping by!

first i like to say thank you again to natalie, melissa, blandina and martina for their responses to my request for advice. it is clear: lining the blanket in a way that i find beautiful will not work so i forget about that.

today i doubted whether i would make a post about the blue diamonds blanket. i’m a little worried that it is boring for you, so i’ll keep it as short as possible:)
the sixth strip i have attached to the blanket and the seventh strip is – except for one rectangle – finished. the embroidery and the buttons on two rectangles you could see last time…

crocheted blue diamonds 7

…..

glad you’re here!

the blanket is now too large for the dining table so i have spread it out on the floor to take a picture, but it is difficult to get a nice sharp photo with clear visible details. the sixth strip is ready but i must still attach it to the blanket. now i have two strips to go and then create the border.

advice needed

the lining of a bag i always make with the sewing machine, but i sew it in by hand. the blue diamonds blanket, i would like to provide with a lining because i think that it will be beautiful and to cover up the back of the embroidery. but i think that this blanket is to large to sew the lining onto by hand.

my question to you is:

do you have experience with sewing crochet work with a sewing machine? filet crochet is stretchy and i do not want to use stretchy fabric.

maybe you can and will advise me? hope you will write me!

see you next time!
